What is considered a dental emergency?
A dental emergency is any issue involving significant pain, bleeding, swelling, or trauma to your teeth, gums, or jaw that needs prompt attention. Common emergencies include a knocked-out or loose tooth, a broken or cracked tooth, a severe toothache, facial swelling, uncontrolled bleeding, or signs of infection, such as fever or a bad taste in the mouth. If you’re unsure, it’s better to call—early care can prevent complications and relieve discomfort. Our team is here to help you feel safe, supported, and comfortable.

What is not considered a dental emergency?
Not every dental concern needs urgent care. Issues like mild tooth sensitivity, a small chip with no pain, a lost filling or crown without discomfort, minor gum irritation, or a dull ache that comes and goes are usually not considered dental emergencies. Food stuck between teeth, a broken denture that still fits comfortably, or a canker sore may also be handled during a regular visit. If you’re unsure, call our office. We’re happy to help you decide the next best step.

What should I do if I have a knocked out tooth?
- Stay calm and locate the tooth immediately; quick action increases the chance of saving it.
- Grasp the tooth by its crown, not its root, to avoid damaging delicate cells.
- If the tooth is dirty, gently rinse it with water only; never scrub or use soap.
- Place the tooth back in its socket if you can, or keep it moist in milk or saliva.
- Don’t store the tooth in water or let it dry out, as this reduces success.
- Contact your dentist or an emergency dental office immediately, ideally within 30 to 60 minutes.
