Preparing for Your Procedure

Ahead of your upcoming appointment involving IV sedation, it’s essential to prepare effectively. Here’s what you need to do:

  • Ensure your well-being: If you’re experiencing symptoms of a head or chest cold, rescheduling may be necessary to ensure optimal safety.
  • Maintain an 8-hour fast: Refrain from consuming any food for at least 8 hours before your appointment. However, you may drink water, unsweetened tea, or black coffee (without cream or sugar) up to 3 hours before. All other food and beverages MUST be avoided 8 hours prior.
  • Opt for comfortable attire: Avoid tight-fitting clothes or long-sleeved tops, as accessibility to your arm is required for the blood pressure cuff.
  • No fingernail polish allowed: Remove all nail polish to prevent any interference with the equipment.
  • Arrange for transportation: It’s imperative to have a designated driver accompany you to and from your appointment. This individual must remain present either in the office or vehicle during the procedure and refrain from running errands. If you’re under 18, this must be a parent or guardian.
  • Assign a caregiver: We recommend having someone stay with you for at least 24 hours post-procedure.
  • Avoid driving: operating machinery or using power tools is prohibited for 24 hours following the procedure, including activities such as mowing the lawn or operating tractors. Drowsiness can be experienced for up to 48 hours after the procedure.

Considering Sedation Alternatives?

Montana Dental Arts offers alternatives tailored to your needs if you’re considering sedation for your dental treatment but are unsure if IV sedation is right for you. If you have questions about the sedation alternatives offered at our practice, call us, and we’ll be happy to discuss them further.

Local Anesthesia: Also known as “novocaine,” this option involves numbing the treatment area, allowing patients to remain awake during the procedure. Many patients find themselves drifting off during treatment, and they are typically able to drive themselves home afterward.

Prescription Anxiety Medication: If you’re seeking a more relaxed experience without the need for IV sedation, a prescription pill can help take the edge off. Administered before your appointment, this medication often induces a state of relaxation, with patients sometimes falling asleep during treatment. However, they typically don’t recall the details the following day. This option requires arranging transportation to and from your appointment to ensure your safety. We can call in the prescription to your pharmacy before your treatment for added convenience.
