FAQs

  • What are the symptoms of periodontal disease?

Periodontal disease often develops quietly, but your body usually sends warning signs. Common symptoms include red, swollen, or tender gums, bleeding when brushing or flossing, and persistent bad breath. You may notice gums pulling away from the teeth, making teeth appear longer, or increased sensitivity. As the condition progresses, your teeth may feel loose, or your bite may change. Early detection is key. If you notice any of these symptoms, a dental evaluation can help protect your smile and overall oral health.

  • What causes gum disease?

Gum disease develops when bacteria in dental plaque build up along and below the gumline. Poor oral hygiene allows plaque to harden into tartar, which irritates gum tissue and triggers inflammation. Over time, this can cause gums to pull away from teeth and form pockets that trap more bacteria. Smoking, hormonal changes, certain medical conditions, medications, genetics, and stress can increase risk. Early stages may be painless, making regular dental visits, daily brushing and flossing, and professional cleanings essential for prevention and long-term oral health.

  • How do you treat gum recession?

At Montana Dental Arts, gum recession is treated in two ways, including:

    • Medication: If an infection is found in the gums, antibiotics may be prescribed. Topical antibiotics can include antibiotic mouth rinse or gels containing medicated relief. Other medications may also be used to treat the underlying problem that is causing gum recession.
    • Gum grafting: Our team can remove a small amount of healthy soft tissue either from the roof of your mouth, from in front of any teeth that already have disproportionate gum coverage, or from another donor source, and attach it to the area where your gums have receded.
  • What is crown lengthening?

Our crown lengthening in Missoula, MT has both esthetic and functional purposes. While many patients seek treatment for cosmetic concerns, we provide treatment for a gummy smile to promote oral health, too. Excessive gum tissues can harbor bacterial plaque underneath, increasing the risk for tooth decay and infection. Our dentists have the expertise to determine the cause of your condition and consider both the functional and esthetic aspects of your treatment.
